Paralegal- Litigation

Basic Function

This non-exempt employee will serve a paralegal and litigation filing clerk role by assisting attorneys in the preparation and filing of legal documents and management of the attorneys litigation dockets.

Essential Duties

Prepare and file documents in federal and state court

  • Provide guidance on federal, state, and individuals judges rules of practice, including ensuring that pleadings, briefs, etc. comply with such rules
  • Arrange for courtesy copies and/or delivery of documents/filings where necessary

Manage Case schedules and calendar dates appropriately

Manage documents on eDiscovery platforms, including running searches and organizing documents.

Litigation Support in preparing legal documents

  • Assist in preparation and filing of legal briefs, memoranda, motions, affirmations, affidavits, declarations, notices of motions, exhibits and other documents related to practice in New York State and Federal courts, as well as Federal trial and appellate courts outside of New York
  • Support attorneys in significant litigation and/or other trial-related matters, including assistance with trial research, preparation, and presentation
  • Prepare privilege logs
  • Gather and organize evidence and other fact information
  • Cite check and finalize briefs, memoranda, affidavits, etc. for filing
  • Summarize depositions, transcripts and records
  • Prepare case summaries, chronologies, correspondence and memoranda
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word Styles and Best Authority to create Tables of Content and Tables of Authorities

Establish, organize and maintain pleadings in electronic and paper files, including devising file organization system.

Perform assigned legal research tasks using all available resources including libraries and online research databases such as Westlaw/Lexis.

Attend and contribute to organization and strategy meetings.

Work closely with attorneys on each assigned case to glean a good understanding of the facts, issues, problems and direction to be pursued in order to reach the ultimate goal.

Other Duties

Assist attorneys with speeches and articles.

Attend courses as appropriate so as to remain up to date on federal and New York State legal rules, especially in connection with Courts local rules and filing procedures.

Perform other related duties as needed or assigned.

Reporting Relationship

The Litigation Paralegal reports directly to the Attorneys in the New York Litigation Group as well as the Firms Human Resources Department or the Office Administrator.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience

The Litigation Paralegal must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a law firm or with a New York court (state or federal). The Paralegal should also be able to effectively utilize digital litigation support and electronic document production applications while having the ability to create, compose, and edit written materials. This employee must have strong knowledge of Lexis, Westlaw, Word and Adobe platforms as well as the electronic filing systems of the State and Federal Courts located in New York. The Paralegal must also possess a thorough knowledge of State and Federal Court rules, litigation procedures and discovery processes (including electronic discovery).

Skills

The Litigation Paralegal must possess excellent verbal and writing skills. The Litigation Paralegal must also have a strong command of the Local Rules in the State and Federal Courts particularly as it effects the requirements of filing, the forms of filings and relevant deadlines for the pleading, discovery and motion practice stages of litigation. Strong computer proficiency is a must, with particular knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe, and e-discovery platforms. Strong communication skills are a must. The Paralegal should be familiar with effective administrative processes and possess the ability to manage a multitude of tasks and cases simultaneously. This employee should be able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as an effective member of the team. The ability to work with many different types of personalities at all levels of organization is a must. Strong organizational, multi-tasking and prioritization skills are required. This individual will need to meet hard deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Education

Paralegal certification from an ABA approved school and/or bachelors degree required.

Physical Demands

Must be able to move around the office up to 15% of the time to make copies, fax, file, etc.; Remains stationary at least 75% of the time; This position constantly operates computers and other office productivity machines (e.g., fax machine, copier, printer, etc.); Occasionally required to move documents or files weighing up to 15 lbs.; This position requires constant communication and exchange of information with the Firm attorneys, clients and staff; This position must be able to inspect and observe information on a computer screen at least 80% of the time.

Working Conditions

Office Environment: Position may, where needed, require some travel including weekend and week-long travel; Overtime may be required.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $94,000 to $102,000.
