Job Description:

Sidley Austin’s New York office seeks an associate with 2+ years of experience to join a practice team supporting one of the largest global asset managers; the position offers a mix of the types of work law firm associates and in-house counsel handle. The associate will be responsible for the provision of legal advice and counsel supporting the FIG and Strategy groups; duties include working directly with investment professionals and in-house counsel on strategic and other transactions, fund-related matters and providing general legal support to the FIG and Strategy groups as well as working closely with the general counsels of platform companies to support all of their legal needs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist on transactions varying in scale and scope that the FIG and/or Strategy groups or FIG platform companies are involved with
  • Assist with board administration and other governance related matters with respect to the FIG platform companies
  • Provide general legal support to the FIG and Strategy groups and FIG platform companies
  • Build relationships and partner closely with business leadership, portfolio managers and other leads across in-house legal and the portfolio/platform companies
  • Assist with fund- related matters
  • Review and draft commercial agreements for in-house legal and FIG platform companies
  • Review and provide counsel on disclosures and marketing materials

Qualifications and Experience

  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school;
  • Admitted in good standing to the New York bar;
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant legal experience in the M&A area of a top tier law firm or in the in-house legal department of a registered investment advisor, hedge fund or fund of funds;
  • Experience advising asset management firms is preferred but not essential;
  • Superior interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships/credibility with relevant internal stakeholders; regulatory representatives, and outside vendors, including attorneys and consultants;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication/interpersonal skills;
  • Executes strategy with the appropriate sense of urgency while also maintaining a grasp of the details;
  • Thinks critically and proposes business-oriented solutions that combine excellent judgement, creativity, risk-taking and technical expertise;
  • Can work independently, as well as in collaborative partnership with the team;
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, rigorous work environment; effectively prioritizes and meets deadlines;
  • Effectively balances multiple competing/concurrent projects;
  • Strong team-player who is pro-active in providing support and who is willing to pitch in and assist on a variety of projects depending on the needs of the team

New York Applicants (and roles reporting to New York): Salaries may vary by location. In New York, the estimated target salary range of this role is $260,000-$365,000. Salary determinations are made based on numerous factors, such as, but not limited to, the relevant market and the skill, experience, class or graduation year, and education of the selected candidate.
