Commercial Litigation Paralegal

Under the general direction of supervising attorney(s) and the Firmwide Paralegal Manager and according to established firm policies and procedures, the Paralegal will provide support and assistance to attorneys in the coordination, management, and supervision of all aspects of international arbitration proceedings and/or litigation, involving disputes across a variety of industries. Responsibilities include maintaining case files, preparing written submissions, and assisting at hearings. The Paralegal maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and firm matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following. Other duties may be requested and/or assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position. Client billable hour requirement: 1,700 hours annually (142 client billable hours average per month).

  • Case management, including maintaining procedural calendars, case files, and electronic databases. Develop and maintain familiarity with key documents and files.
  • Coordinate and manage document production and retrieval from clients, opposing parties, and third parties under the supervision of the supervising attorneys.
  • Provide support during case filings, including collecting and preparing exhibits, compiling and updating drafts, proofreading briefs and other written submissions, and checking citations to legal sources and fact evidence for accuracy, content and proper format to ensure compliance with legal citation rules.
  • Provide support for hearings, including pre-hearing preparation of PowerPoint slides, witness preparation, binders of exhibits for cross-examinations, and attendance at hearings.
  • Prepare and check translations of documents and written submissions.
  • Prepare materials for client pitches, public tenders and marketing purposes.

Supervisory Responsibilities

On a case-by-case basis, may supervise the work performed by Project Assistant and/or Paralegal I and II staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the firms policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, training, and providing input into the performance appraisal process.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelors degree and five or more years progressive work experience in litigation and/or international arbitration preferred. Ability to use electronic legal research databases (Lexis, Westlaw, etc.). Paralegal certificate from an ABA accredited paralegal program a plus.
  • Russian language fluency, written and oral, is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks and to complete work within strict deadlines. Ability to follow instructions efficiently, to work independently, and to trouble-shoot and make decisions within the scope of the positions responsibilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Ability to compile and analyze data and provide concise, detailed information in emails, written correspondence and oral communications.
  • Attention to detail and precision in the performance of essential duties, including record keeping, data collection, processing information, maintaining files, preparing work product, and communicating with team.
  • Dependable team player who works collaboratively and cooperatively with others, communicates with courtesy, and maintains effective relationships with a diverse group of attorneys, clients, staff and outside parties.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat, Relativity, Westlaw and other legal research internet databases.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including computer, laser printer, scanner, telephone, photocopier, calculator, facsimile, etc. Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute files, written documentation and copies, or office supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Work occasionally requires more than 35 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • The position may occasionally involve travel, both international and within the U.S., particularly for hearings that may be held outside of New York.

The annualized salary range for this position is $72,000 to $115,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
